5 Reasons why exercise should be top priority during a divorce

During times of stress, too often the doughnut box gets devoured and the gym membership gets neglected. The easy way to pacify the screaming emotions you feel is through a quick fix cookie, baked good or any other carb or sugar-coated treat.

Unfortunately, the good feeling is only taste bud deep. It quickly fades until you need more and more to quell your anger, fears, regrets and more. It seems that what we need the most of is exactly what we do the least of, exercise. Exercise has many benefits that can serve your highest good when you make it a priority.

Divorce and depression

Divorce is a cataclysmic event with the potential to cause significant damage to our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. It is extremely common for people to sink into the murky world of depression, anxiety and even suicidal thoughts after divorce.

Not only is this debilitating for your own life, but also on children and other family members. It can cause problems with your ability to manage your workload and all other daily tasks that resume.

Here is a list of reasons why exercise should be a must for anyone going through a divorce.

  1. It gets emotions out; suppression equals depression.
  2. It makes you feel better and helps your mood stay uplifted and positive.
  3. It helps you tackle the many decisions you face by increasing blood flow and aiding in sleep, which assists your decision-making ability.
  4. It is a good example to your children of healthy ways of managing stress.
  5. It is empowering. It reminds you that your life is not completely out of control. You can control how you look and feel.

When you don’t feel like exercising, that is when you need it the most. Your body will want to collapse and take short-cuts out of the pain, but you are only delaying your true healing. You can preserve your physical, mental and emotional well-being during this vulnerable time.

If you neglect your body, it can quickly damage your self-esteem and easily take you on a downward spiral. Start fighting back and releasing your emotions and frustrations with exercise of any kind. Whatever movement helps you feel strong and energized is going to lead you down a better path as you move forward. Just keep moving!
