13 Simple ways to brighten your mood during divorce

The challenges of divorce are oftentimes physically, emotionally and financially draining. If you’re feeling exhausted by these woes, it’s important to take time out of your day to lift your spirits.

Try any one of these 13 easy ways to take your mind off of the divorce and feel a little bit better.

Treat yourself

Once or twice a week, buy yourself lunch at work, instead of bringing one from home. You could also try making yourself something yummy for breakfast or splurging on that spa day or gaming console you’ve been thinking about.

Spend time with an animal

Studies have shown that spending time with an animal can greatly reduce your stress. If you don’t have a furry companion, consider volunteering your time to walk animals at your local animal shelter.

Jam out

Music can be therapeutic. Sad songs can help us release upset feelings, while bouncy beats can bring back a smile. Whatever your preference, turn on the tunes for a quick pick-me-up when you’re feeling down. There’s nothing quite like finding a new favorite song.

Practice gratitude

Try remembering three different things you are grateful for at the start of your day. This practice can be a humbling reminder of the positives in our lives that we sometimes take for granted.

Take a walk

The combination of both physical activity and the great outdoors can do wonders for mental health. If you have a sit-down job, go on a short break by taking a quick walk.

Do a breathing exercise

Focusing on breathing for at least a few minutes can help your mind relax and expel worrisome thoughts. Keep breaths deep and consistent, in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Complete one selfless act each day

Whether it’s simply giving a compliment, calling your mom or holding the door open, make it your goal to improve some else’s day with at least one gesture. You’ll feel good about making a positive difference.

Make new friends

Using a smartphone application, like Bumble Friends, is one way to expand your social circle. The rush of meeting someone who you have lots in common with can be great fun. It can also offer you support during this tough time.

Create something new

If you have a bit of time, try to create. Whether it be a new dinner, cappuccino, hairstyle, scarf, or birdhouse, there’s a great sense of satisfaction that comes with the invention, progress and completion of something new.

Journal

Sometimes it helps just to get all of your thoughts down onto the page.

Challenge yourself

Do a puzzle, solve a riddle, play trivia, learn a new instrument, start a video game or learn the capitols of all the countries. Anything you can do to challenge your mind will help you grow and get your mind off of your troubles.

Join a group

There are tons of groups to join. Consider trying intramural sports, sewing, book club, yoga, archery, hunting or motorcycle groups.

Get between 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep

If you’re having trouble sleeping, there are a number of essential oils, teas, dietary supplements, masks and snoring mechanisms to help you get through the night.

Get help

Dealing with your divorce probably won’t brighten your mood. But using the assistance of a skilled attorney to do it just might. An attorney can take on many of the logistic concerns involving your divorce, so you can trust that you’re making the right decisions without sacrificing your sanity.
