What You Need To Know About Points Violations In Georgia

A speeding ticket. Running a red light. Texting while driving. Before you know it, you’ve accumulated quite a few points on your driver’s license. So what is Georgia’s point system and how do points violations in Georgia work?

The state assigns a certain number of points to each kind of moving violation, ranging from two to six points. For example, speeding 15 to 18 mph over the posted speed limit is two points. Improper passing is four points. If you are convicted for both offenses, you now have a total of six points on your license. Drivers face penalties if they reach a certain number of points.

You Could Face A License Suspension

Under the point system, drivers who accumulate 15 points in a 24-month period will have their license suspended. Your insurance rates also may increase. If you are 18 and over, it only takes 15 points to suspend your license. It doesn’t take long to accumulate 15 points. If you build a history of traffic offense convictions, you could one day be pulled over and suddenly find yourself dealing with a license suspension, which could lead to your arrest, affects your ability to work, provide for your family and pay your bills.

For all of these reasons, it is wise to consult with an attorney before pleading guilty to a traffic violation and tarnishing your driving record.
